EYFS Curriculum

Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception)

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old.

All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, nurseries and school Reception classes.

Here at WPF we follow this programme

Here is a short video for parents/carers which explains it simply.

The curriculum is based on:

Areas of Learning

Your child will mostly be taught through games and play.

There are seven areas of learning and development

All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected.

Three prime areas are particularly important for learning and forming relationships. They build a foundation for children to thrive and provide the basis for learning in all areas. These are the prime areas:

  1. Communication and language
  2. Physical development
  3. Personal, social and emotional development

 The four specific areas are:

  1. Literacy
  2. Mathematics
  3. Understanding the world
  4. Expressive arts and design

Full details can be found here: early years framework.

Assessments

Your child will be assessed within 6 weeks of starting school. This is called the Reception Baseline Assessment ( RBA) The data will go to the DFE. The school will not see or have access to this information. The ‘test are a series of games for the children to play with their Teacher on a 1:1 basis. Their class teacher will assess them at the end of the school year when they turn 5.

The assessment is based on classroom observation – your child will not be tested. It uses the early learning goals, which can be found in the early years framework.

Once your child has completed their Reception year, they will move onto the Year 1 Curriculum.
